The Eagles - Players with Special needs and different abilities

Tag Rugby is an exciting, yet simple, mixed non-contact sport, played by men and women, boys and girls of all ages and abilities. There are no scrums or line-outs and tackling is strictly not allowed. The game has been designed to be enjoyed by all players from beginners to experienced players and players with special needs and different abilities.

The DLSP Eagles is a Tag Rugby team made up of players with special needs. It is part of De La Salle Palmerston Rugby Club, Kilternan, Co Dublin. A club with over a hundred years of experience in developing players. Tag Rugby has experienced unparalleled growth in Ireland over the past number of years and that growth has given opportunities for everyone to get involved, have fun and make new friends, on and off the rugby pitch!

The primary focus for the Eagles playing tag rugby is to have fun, get players to appreciate the game of rugby, develop ball handling and spatial awareness, helping to develop skills and fitness to improve their daily lives.

Who runs the team? The coaching team is made up of dedicated volunteers with a wide range of skills and experience. Amongst them are coaches, players and learning disability professionals as well as people who just want to get stuck in!

When do we Play? Every Sunday morning at 11:30am in Kirwan Park, Kilternan (between Stepaside and Enniskerry) we have training. Unless we have an away game against other teams in Dublin or further a field.

Over the past few years, we’ve had numerous teams visit us and we’ve played in tournaments with teams from Seapoint , Westmanstown Special Needs (Garda RFC), Graystones and Barnhall, Mullingar and Garryowen. We have had the privilege of playing on the RDS pitch during halftime at Leinster games. We have paraded in the Aviva and have played there in the half time slot.

We have had numerous VIPs visiting our team to show support, including the Ireland manager Joe Schmidt, Brent Pope, Alan Quinlan, Alex Petrilli "the king of paws" Isaac Boss and Ciera Peelo an Irish Olympian sailer. While some of these VIPs are not from a rugby background they have all come to different training sessions and participated in the enjoyment and fun on the day.

Below is a link to a short video which I hope will give you an idea of what we are doing. The game was played with the enfaces on having fun. Some of our players are high dependency resulting in a shadow coach on the pitch with them. While the coaches are not allowed score they act as a mentor helping to keep the game moving, encouraging the participants and watching out for any signs that the player is under stress.
