Balbriggan RFC vs DLSP U18.5s – Leinster School / Youth Premier League

"Did we win?" came the solitary voice from an innocent bystander (who happened to be a parent of a DLSP player).

Such was the task ahead of the De La Salle U18.5s as they went out to Balbriggan on a cold and breezy Sunday that a win was something elusive.

The question was reasonable - after a number of attempts in the last two years, Balbriggan were proving to be a thorn in the side for DLSP U18.5s.

They lived up to their standing in that after a fairly equal but robust contest in the first twenty minutes, Balbriggan were rewarded with their first half wind advantage with an opportunistic try and conversion leaving us 7 points adrift.

What could have been a head dropping monument turned out to be a rallying call in that DLSP responded in kind with a scintillating try down the left the wing by Jude O’Reilly . Unfortunately we didn’t convert but, we were in the race now only down 7-5 after 25 mins.

In a physical encounter between both teams, the De la Salle matched every power play by Balbriggan forwards with strong and aggressive defences, rewarding the travelling team with another try before half time with Jack O'Leary diving over leaving the visitors leading at the break, 10-7.

In what were difficult conditions with a strong wind making both lineouts and passing a challenge, Balbriggan surged forward with another converted try in the second half to lead 14-10 with 15 minutes to go.

DLSP didn’t lose their concentration in what at times threatened to boil over into handbags and this concentration was rewarded with a third converted try from Aaron Walsh making the lead change hands again with De La Salle 14-17 to the better.

Both teams battled for possession resulting in some unforced errors abetted by the wind, with our U18.5s repelling the home team on the line with some incredible defence.

The DLSP U18.5s aggression to the ball was rewarded with a penalty to close off the game 20-14 and a well deserved and welcome win away.

I won’t print Neville’s response to the opening question.

Next up is Barnhall at home on the 12th January with a 10.45am kick off.
