Spencer Cup News

(25 Aug 2019)

It was a warm and humid afternoon at Kirwan Park as a Salmo side which featured ten debutants went down 7-24 to Seapoint in the first round of the Spencer Cup.

The first quarter was played largely between the 22s, Seapoint slightly shading possession and territory with Salmo looking dangerous on the counter. A burst down the right wing from Gavin Rundle fed Steve Meagher who fended off nicely but unfortunately the final pass went to ground, resulting in a scrum for the visitors.

Salmo would put the first score on the board as we neared the half-hour mark, Michael Cooke breaking out from the home 22 before grubbering through for Ian O'Connor to collect, drop the hammer and touch down underneath the posts. John O'Brien added the extras to give Salmo a 7-0 lead.

Seapoint pulled one back before halftime, although the conversion was missed, to see us turn around 7-5 to the good.

The second half was largely Seapoint's and they would go on to register three further tries as their physicality proved difficult to live with and a very effective lineout maul caused the home team no little trouble. Salmo dug in and didn't drop the heads however and it was great to see some good lineout work and big tackles coming in from Eoin McDaid, James Feeney and Cameron Stewart in particular.

On behalf of everyone at the club, our congratulations go to all those who made their first team debuts today, on what was a proud day for the players and their families.
