New Director of Rugby Announced

(21 Nov 2018)

De La Salle Palmerston rugby club is delighted to announce the appointment of Norman Byrne to the position of Director of Rugby, with immediate effect.

Norman’s role will encompass all aspects of rugby across the club, from Senior and Junior adult rugby, through the Academy and Mini Youth groups, and the Eagles and Girls sections. The role will include oversight of and input into rugby matters including providing support and assistance to coaches and managers, liaising with the club’s Executive Committee, leading the club’s engagement with our partner schools, and Norman will take a very hands-on role in the day to day rugby activities all round.

He will also be working on a Strategic Rugby Development Plan, to build on the early progress made through the establishment of the Academy Group, and to deliver a long term sustainable programme of rugby in DLSP, incorporating themes such as Player and Coach Development, Operational Efficiency, and Succession Planning.

Norman joined DLSP in 1993/94 and was Club Captain in 1996/97, and has played for the first team and junior teams at various levels since then (still togging out occasionally). He player-coached a number of junior teams, and has been the Head Coach of the group that is the core of this season’s Under 20s since they were Under 7s (he will also continue in the Under 20 Head Coach role now). Norman has led the rollout of a number of initiatives for Mini Youth players and coaches over recent years, including the Youth Player Development Programme and the Integrated Pathway, each of which will further evolve through his new role.

Dan McCartney, Chairman of the DLSP Management Committee, commented “We are delighted that Norman has committed to this Director of Rugby role, on a full time basis, and believe that it is a great fit for both DLSP and Norman at this key time. He is passionate about the club and will bring huge experience of rugby, both club wise and broader, to the role together with his business background. I look forward to working closely with him.”

Norman commented “I am absolutely thrilled to be appointed Director of Rugby for De La Salle Palmerston FC, a club that has been and remains a huge part of my life for 25 years already. It will be a challenging role but one that I am fully committed to doing successfully, and I am particularly looking forward to working with all the really hard-working and passionate club people who do so much, across the full club spectrum.
