John Madden Cup

(14 Apr 2019)

Salmo were unable to repeat the Spencer Cup comeback victory in a very evenly-contested Madden Cup Final with Tallaght RFC at a windy Malahide RFC on Saturday afternoon.

Tallaght's physical side put a lot of early pressure on Salmo and it was rewarded with an early converted try and a penalty to put them 10-0 ahead after only 12 minutes. At that stage Salmo were struggling to retain possession and matters were compounded when they lost centre Des Ryan and outhalf Warren Doyle to injuries before 20 minutes had gone.

They managed to steady the ship however and got some structure and momentum into their game, duly rewarded with an excellent try by the very impressive Gavin Rundle, converted superbly by Shane Cranny - and went into halftime with some good momentum at 7-10.

They started the second half well too and when a Cranny penalty made it 10-10, it appeared that it might be Salmo’s day. However a number of small errors and the concession of two soft penalties when on the Tallaght line allowed the opposition to use the wind well and kick themselves back into Salmo territory, from where they earned and kicked an excellent long range penalty with 8 minutes to go. Salmo tried hard to get back into scoring position and created a couple of half breaks, but couldn’t convert possession into field position; ultimately, in their commendable efforts to score, they lost possession and conceded a last-minute try. The final whistle signalled a Tallaght victory that was, on balance, deserved on the day.

Many congratulations to Tallaght on their victory. The Salmo lads should keep their heads up high as they never gave up and did the club proud as always.

We have a great gallery of photos from the final for you with thanks to Paul Finlay. They are across 2 pages so don't forget to click through to see them all!
