Ian Burke Appointed Club Captain for 2020/21

(20 May 2020)

The executive committee is delighted to be able to announce the appointment of Ian Burke as
club captain for the 2020/21 season.

A keen sportsman all his life, playing rugby, football, GAA, hockey, swimming and cricket until his teens, Ian has been with Salmo since he was 8. A pupil of De La Salle College, he played for both school and club and represented Leinster at U18, U19 and U20 levels.

Having just completed a degree in food science at UCD, Ian is very focused on health and fitness and will undoubtedly bring that passion with him, as well as his love for rugby and Salmo, to his new role.

Ian is very honoured that the club hosts an annual festival in memory of his brother Kieran, something which means an awful lot to him and the rest of the Burke family.

Reflecting on his appointment, Ian said: "It's an absolute honour and a privilege to have been given this opportunity. It has always been a goal of mine to captain our club, and I’m really excited and ready for the responsibilities and challenges ahead.

"I will be doing everything I possibly can to do what's best for the team and the club. I'm hoping to do the team and the club proud in leading by example on and off the field so that we will begin to get Salmo back to where we belong.”

Director of Rugby, Norman Byrne commented: "I’m delighted that Ian has agreed to captain the club next season. He will be a great asset on and off the field, and I know he will embrace the captaincy on an overall club basis. I expect him to take up the mantle of his predecessor, the other Ian, and lead by both word and deed.

"I’d like to thank Ian O’Connor for all his efforts, and wish Ian Burke every success as he works with Niall and the other coaches to lead the senior squad to success next season."
