"Alex Hoban was born in Dublin on the 6th of April 2010 who was diagnosed with cerebral palsy on his 1st birthday. He is a bright, brave and very friendly little boy but because of this condition cannot walk unaided.
He attends Enable Ireland in Sandymount and walks with the aid of a Kaye frame and will require a wheelchair for long distances. He wears splints to help stretch his heels and keep his feet and legs supported plus other daily therapy with the help of his parents. He receives regular botox injections to help relieve the tightness in his legs and this requires his feet to be casted for long periods to help stretch his muscles.
With your help there is an operation available in St. Louis, Missouri which can help to permanently alleviate the spasticity in Alex's legs and give him the best chance of walking completely unaided. A highly accomplished surgeon by the name of Dr. Park is carrying out this procedure called selective dorsal rhizotomy (SDR) and has helped numerous children to date with cerebral palsy achieve their full potential.
This procedure is not carried out in this country, it is not covered by the HSE or private health insurance companies and requires in the region of €60,000 to cover the cost of the operation, potential heel cord/hamstring lengthening and immediate aftercare. Alex and his parents will need to stay in the States apx. 5 weeks and return for a check-up. In the 2 to 3 year period after Alex returns home it is critical to the success of the operation that he receives specialist daily physiotherapy and equipment. This is also not covered by the HSE or private insurance and costs are ongoing during this period therefore further fundraising will be required well beyond this target.
Alex's parents, Olwyn and Tony's dreams are for him to have this procedure carried out by the end of the year to give Alex the best chance of walking into school unaided in September 2015. Full details are available on
www.footstepsforalex.com for further information and donation enquiries."
